This is a tutorial for “pwning”, or jailbreaking, the iPod Touch, 1st or 2nd gen, running firmware 3.0.

Materials

redsn0w 0.8

iPod Touch running 3.0

iPod Touch Firmware version 3.o

Before starting below, you should have ALL materials and requirements listed above. Understand everything on your iPod will be wiped. Read the FAQ for more info.

1. Connect your iPod DIRECTLY to your computer. (Don’t use an extension cable or external USB hub)

2. Open redsn0w 0.8

3. Close all iTunes processes. Click here for more info.

4. Inside of redsn0w, click the browse button and locate the firmware you just downloaded.  Open the firmware and wait for redsn0w to process it. Be patient as this can take a while.

5. Once redsn0w has verified the firmware, click next.

6. redsn0w will now patch the firmware to its jailbroken state.

7. This screen will ask you what options you want to include with the jailbreak.  I recommend checking Cydia but not Icy. Cydia is the application that allows you to install 3rd party apps to your iPod. Icy does the same thing, however it has been causing a lot of issues and will cause redsn0w to crash, so if you really want it click here, but otherwise your not missing anything.

7. The next screen will make sure your device is connected properly.  As redsn0w says, your iPod should be plugged into your computer and turned off. (Review the next step before pressing next) Once this is done, click next.

8.  Now redsn0w will instruct you to put your iPod into DFU mode. You will need to press the power and home buttons in a specific sequence.  Just follow the simple on-screen instructions, and when you have completed the steps redsn0w will automatically begin to jailbreak your iPod.

9. Now you can just leave it for a while, it will load different things onto the iPod and jailbreak it.

10. Once you get the screen below saying “Done”, your iPod is successfully jailbroken.
